What does the word “mother” mean to you?

After the Japanese earthquake took place, the rescuers searched in ruins of houses to search for missing people. During a visit at a young woman’s house, they found a dead body. Hoping that the woman could still be alive, rescuers reached for her body. Unfortunately, she had already passed away and the only thing that remained was her cold and stiff body lying on the floor.

The leader of the rescuers looked under the dead body curiously. “A child! There is a child!” he screamed. After hearing the shouting, the team came together and began to remove the piles of objects that surrounded the dead woman. Under the mother’s body, a 3-month-old baby, was wrapped in a blanket, and sleeping peacefully when the leader picked him up. She sacrificed herself in order to save her child’s life. Furthermore, after further examination, a cell phone was found inside the blanket with a text message on the screen saying the following: “If you can survive, you must remember that I love you.” This is a mother’s true love.

"La Azul y Blanco"

No, “La Azul y Blanco” is NOT the brand of a detergent. And no, it is NOT a poem either, that is Adriana and Isabel’s section. “La azul y blanco” is actually the nickname for the Nicaraguan National Soccer Team; and lucky you, I will bring you up to date with what has been going on with our beloved “Albiazules.”

FIFA, soccer’s highest authority in the world, has 6 different branches to manage professional soccer. CONCACAF is the branch in charge of managing North, Central America and Caribbean soccer. So, for those of you who think Nicaragua has to play against Brazil or Argentina to go to the World Cup, that’s not the case. They are in a different region than us.

Currently, Nicaragua is playing the FIFA World Cup qualifying stage. Qualifying works as follows:

CONCACAF consists of 35 member teams. According to the FIFA ranking, the best six teams advance directly to the group phase III (GPIII); the last 10 teams go to group phase I (GPI); and the middle 19 teams advance directly to group phase II (GPII).

GPI is simply distributed into 5 round matches (remember, ten teams) that bring about 5 winners.

GPII is distributed into six groups (A- F) of four countries (24 in total). The 19 teams that advanced directly to GPII are complemented with the 5 winners of GPI, making a total of 24. Nicaragua is in group C, along with Panama, Dominica and Bahamas [the latter retired from competition (too afraid to play against Nicaragua)]. At the end, only the group winners (six in total) advance to GPIII.

Then, GPIII is distributed into three groups (A- C) of four countries (12 teams). So, the best six teams that advanced directly since the beginning are complemented with the six winners of GPII, making a total of 12.

Am I making any sense so far? I hope so.

Finally, the top two teams of each group in GPIII advance to “la hexagonal final,” which consists of six teams (duh!). At the end, three an a half tickets for the World Cup are distributed by CONCACAF: the top three teams advance to the World Cup in Brazil (three tickets) whereas the fourth one (half a ticket) plays a playoff game against the winner of the Oceania region.

This is the schedule for Nicaragua in GPII:

September 2, 2011 Dominica 0 – 2 Nicaragua (away)

September 6, 2011 Nicaragua 1 – 2 Panama (home)

October 12, 2011 Panama 5 – 1 Nicaragua (away)

November 12, 2011 Nicaragua – Dominica (home)

Saturday, November 12 will be the next home match at the National Soccer Stadium by UNAN at 4 pm. I invite YOU to come (but you obviously have to pay). “Magnetic Boys”

Have you guys ever tried placing random objects like spoons or forks on your bare chests to see what sticks and what doesn’t? Well, there are people who do and their names are Ivan Stoiljkovic, 6-year-old Croatian boy, and Bogdan, 7-year-old Serbian.

These kids have a sort of strange magnetic ability where lightweight metals such as keys and spoons only stick to bare skin on the chest in a specific angle. These “magnetic” kids are known to have special psychic powers and an unknown body energy field. However, according to a Belgrade radiologist, “there is no medical or scientific explanation.”

The reason why scientists believe this is happening is because objects are “held in place by simple skin friction. Bare skin is not only pliable and elastic, but also emits oils which can cause lightweight objects to stick the skin.” Of course, we don’t notice this because we don’t try putting kitchen items like spoon on our chests like Ivan and Bogdan do.

Steak Made from Human Excrement: Is It Safe?

What happens if you eat steak made from human excrement?

“Eww” might be the first expression that first comes to your mind. However, have you ever asked yourself if it were safe to eat this? Whether you like it or not, researchers in Japan have announced that they have produced “synthesized meat from proteins found in human waste.” Furthermore, experts say that it is safe to eat meat made from human feces; but, it must first be cooked in order to kill poisonous pathogens.

“The Japanese researchers isolated proteins from bacteria in sewage.” This is done by extracting the protein, carbohydrates, and fats; the excrement-meat mixture is made by recombining them. According to Digital Trends, 63 % of proteins, 25 % of carbohydrates, 3 % of lipids, and 9 % of minerals compose this scrumptious delicacy. Furthermore, soy protein is added to increase the flavor and give it some color.

Theoretically, it is not wrong to eat food from human waste. The ideal of eating plants “that have been fertilized with manure of other excrement, because the nutrients in the excrement become part of the plants,” is the same. What do you think? Just because researchers say that it is safe to eat meat from human excrement, should we accept the idea?

This way, you will have a personalized bottle that you can use, reuse, re-reuse, and re-re-reuse!! :D

Why people fall in love with soccer?

Cupid must have been hung-over the day he shot his arrow at me. Instead of fixing my eyes upon a beautiful girl (you know, in slow motion and all the drama), the first thing that came across my sight was a soccer ball. He made me fall in love with soccer! As cheesy as this story may seem, I really want to tell you about why people (including myself) become so passionate about soccer.

Simplicity

Soccer can be played anywhere with anything. Rocks could be used for goal posts and rags for balls, and that is it! You could even use a perfectly sphere-shaped stone that you discovered in your backyard; but of course, that would hurt!

Rules

Soccer is bound to elemental rules ‒laws of equality, non-violence and restraint‒ that identify easily with every culture.

Imagination

It requires no more than a little imagination, something everyone has in an infinite amount.

Paradox

Good soccer is beautiful and at the same time difficult. It is complicated to put this enigma in words, but it does have a mysterious beauty; a beauty hard to describe and that you have to discover for yourself.

Unpredictability

Unlike many other sports, the team that everybody is rooting for, can have a small mishap and lose it all in a minute of seconds! Imagine the adrenaline knowing you are about to win it all and then because of a silly mistake you lose it all, I don’t think I would be able to cope with myself!

Universal and particular

Unlike any other sport, soccer is particular yet universal. For example, Nicas can root for their national team while cheering for Brazil in a match happening on the other side of the world.

Fantasy Soccer

Finally, let me list some of the tricks: the self-pass, the bicycle, the elastica, the roulette, bicycle kick, scissor kick, the palomita, heel kick, the vaselina, the scorpion kick, reverse-cross kick, the tunnel, and the panenka style kick, among others. (If you knew them all, I’d take my hat off for you right now.)

Fighting Poverty in Nicaragua

Imagine you are a little girl, fourteen years old, who has been sexually abused and abandoned. You have no home, no food, and feel you have no future because you do not have the means to receive an education. Yet, one day a complete stranger comes to you and says that they are willing to help you out. You follow them because you know you have nothing to do or lose. The night comes and you go to sleep. As you open your eyes the next morning, a smile erases the traces of sadness in your face and you realize that you have a home, you have food, you have education; but most important of all, you have a future.

This is the story of many girls at Hogar de Niñas Cristo Obrero in Diriomo, Granada. This place is home for girls from the ages 3 to 18 who have been sexually abused, abandoned, and/or mistreated. The basic needs for these girls are provided; such as shelter, food, and basic education.

However, the story does not end here. What happens to these girls when they turn 18 and have to leave? Where will they go? What will they do? Who will offer them a job? Well, there is already a solution provided for them. One of the options is to assist Instituto Juan Pablo II in Managua. This is another social institution in Nicaragua that sheds a light of hope for people in this country. This foundation is a technical school. This means that people who have no means to pursue an education will get taught basic skills. These skills which include carpentry, bakery, English, among others, are taught in this institution so these people have a chance to enter the work force.

But what would happen if these institutions got closed down due to no contributions? This is something that we should not allow to happen. There are many people in need in Nicaragua that feel they have no means to get ahead. However, shedding the light, or contributing to these institutions can be fairly easy and being able to help those in need can constitute a great personal satisfaction. These contributions can be made in the form of donating food for the children or by “Apadrinamiento,” which is to “adopt” one of the students and pay monthly fees for the education of the young girl. Nature is not appealing as you may think. Sometimes, natural disasters may cover the attractiveness of trees with spider webs.

Last summer in Pakistan, floods swamped parts of this nation and created millions of spiders. According to the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development, “in July, 10 years’ worth of rain fell in one week, affecting 20 million people, and leaving behind water that spanned an area the size of England.”

Furthermore, four months after the flood, a photographer captured images of trees creatively wrapped with spider webs. Although they took control of the tree, spiders helped reduce the amount of the mosquito population, because these insects complete their life cycles with water. "I've heard it said, That people come into our lives for a reason, Bringing something we must learn, And we are led, To those who help us most to grow, If we let them , And we help them in return, Well, I don't know if I believe that's true, But I know I'm who I am today, Because I knew you... ”This verse, is from a musical called Wicked. Two women meet and change each other's lives; the same way many professors have changed ours. As you may know, this month has been teacher’s appreciation month, so in honor of our professors, this editorial is dedicated to those who have helped us grow.

My mother told me that many years ago, a teacher was part of the family and somehow another parent; students would completely respect teachers, and teachers would never ever disrespect a student, no matter what the case was. However, as time has gone by, students have lost respect towards teachers, and teachers have forgotten their actual mission; teach students not only about their subject, but also about care enough for them and teach them about life.

At UAM, we have many teachers who have true vocation. Teachers that really want their students to understand the subject, teaching them much more than what the syllabus states and explaining as many times as needed to make the students comprehend. More important, they are also willing to help students improve even if that means spending more time with a student that is having problems.

Nonetheless, we also have teachers who seem to lack this real will to teach. Some do not have the right pedagogic skills; others do not even have a full understanding of the material they are meant to cover. Moreover, there have been occasions where teachers have lost the respect towards students. All of these factors influence the development not only professionally but ethically of the student. Not to mention that this gives others the impression that teachers are doing what they are getting paid for.

Dearest professors: The best teachers teach from the heart not from the book. To all those professors who have helped us grow, thank you very much! To those professors who may seem to have lost vocation remember: Carl Jung once said, “One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child”.

Walking around the farm field

Is simply a curved and dusty path.

As I go for a leisure walk

I feel a pleasure and

Joy I cannot deny.

From the position I stand, an image between the four cardinal

points of the farm field can be perceived.

To the west, the translucent and mild lake occupies

the territory and to the east,

the rebellious cows resonate with delight their bells, surrounded

by giant trees that behind their shadows

whisper silently the bashful and small tree.

Unlike the city, in which the

scent of petroleum conquers the path and with a

dynamic wind fills the bus with its smell of fuel,

the air is fresh and clean with a dazzling sky.

For you,

walking around the farm field is boggy, a

floor too cool for crops,

but

for me,

My Romeo (My World)

I glided to the garden dressed in my gown,

Feeling as if I was opening my eyes for the first time,

Gazing at the horizon; encountering my Romeo.

He was the light.

He was the flowers

That with time bloomed into a myriad colors.

My heart blossomed along with them.

I sneaked outside silently every night hiding from my parents to meet him

He was the trees.

He was the bright day, the dark night,

The animals, the wind

That caressed me with their soft velvet wings.

My love was his love.

He was the stars, the moon, the sun.

Waiting outside my balcony every day and night

Like a guardian angel, way up high, towering above me,

Waiting for us to meet again.

One day the mystery was over, my family found him,

They could not understand.

They were killing him.

Keeping us,

Apart.

They poisoned the water,

And one morning Romeo was no more.

I stabbed the dagger into my heart wondering just why

The ones who could not put the stars in line,

Would wilt the flowers,

Would destroy their own lives,

Would kill my Romeo:

The world.

Sports: The Clash of the Titans

Two draws and one win apiece is how the titans of the soccer Spanish Liga, Real Madrid F.C. and Barcelona F.C., split the spoils after the awaited “Fantastic Four.”

The four matches exceeded the expectations. Barcelona played with a divine power whereas Real Madrid built the famous “White Wall” in front of their goal. The teams fought until their deaths, defended their goal posts with their souls during every match. There were plenty of chances to score, nasty fouls, crazy red cards, hateful tackles, and luckily for the fans, exquisite joga bonito, the beautiful game. At the end of the games, players had to drag their fatigued legs to the dressing room.

The Results

For the Spanish Liga, they shredded their skin for a final of 1-1. Three days later, Real Madrid snatched the Copa del Rey, winning 1-0 in an epic extra time. Finally, for the UEFA Champions League, Barcelona imposed 2-0 in the first leg and did the minimum in the second leg to draw 1-1. While Barcelona won the ticket to the UEFA Champions League Final, Real Madrid took Barcelona’s crumbs: the Copa del Rey.

Now, like a kid for dessert, the world is waiting the UEFA Champions League Final on May 28 in Wembley, where Barcelona will meet Manchester United for the glory.

Yet, when our lips meet in a tender kiss,

When his gentle love words enter my ears,

When in his arms I am in joyful bliss,

As a sword, he obliterates my fears.

Into this eternal dream I subdue,

I close my eyes knowing this love is true.

Inaugural Lecture at UAM

On Tuesday April 5th, UAM (Universidad Americana) officially opened the Academic Year 2011, which took place in front of the Student Center facility "Salvador Cardenal Barquero.

The welcoming lecture was given by Dr. Ernesto Medina Sandino, UAM Rector, who reported the university's major achievements in 2010-2011 and highlighted the university´s commitment to the academic future of Nicaragua. The Rector reported how UAM students have made successful careers within and outside Nicaragua. For example, many of the graduates from the Law faculty are working in the best firms in the country, and graduates of the CUSE faculty are now working on successful financial firms.

The inaugural lecture was delivered by Dr. Antenor Rosales Bolanos, Chairman of the Central Bank of Nicaragua, who addressed the guests present with the speech: ¨ The challenges of the Nicaraguan economy and the role Human Resource ¨.

During the event the UAM authorities rewarded the best academic students of the university, as well as artists and athletes who stood out during 2010.

At the end of the inaugural lecture, people present were delighted with the singer-songwriter Carlos Mejía Godoy, who played Nicaraguan songs, and the musical group Cuneta Son Machin.

"No Professor that was in 1914. I'm sure." Her look told me, my facts were wrong. I murmured to myself, “The Panamanian Canal was built right before WWI, I'm sure it was right before it.” I could feel my heart racing, and even though I was directly under the AC, a trickle of sweat ran down my spine. “No Professor it was in the year 1914, I am not sure what month exactly but I am sure it was in the year 1914” I was getting jumpy, I did not like correcting teachers when it came to facts, it made me feel rather awkward, but I knew I was right. I mean, after studying US history in high school for two years, something had to stick to my head, right? Despite the fact that my teacher insisted it was 1910; I knew I had to be right, I decided to Google the answer. I could feel my head whizzing with facts trying to prove I was right, I could feel my classmates staring at me, sure I loved contradicting my Professors especially when I feel so sure of myself.   While my Professor assigned us our class work, I Googled the fact and waited for the Internet to respond, every second felt like an hour, I restlessly tapped my foot against the floor waiting for the page to respond, or to find the answer in the book. I was having a mini-panic attack. About ten minutes afterwards, I found the answer. I was right, I had never felt so relieved knowing I did not mess up, and then it struck me. I was shocked by how much we depend on the internet to prove a point and how long we need to wait to get an answer.

That was not the first class where I had felt that my heart was about to stop when I could not get my work done. It is ironic, a lot of us have to take classwork additional to our homework, because so often we just waste time trying to access internet and are not able to finish in the classroom; the Professors also get frustrated because they cannot continue their lesson due to internet failure.  Some students wait around between classes and try to work on their assignments but, oh! guess what there's no access to Internet. No, wait! wait! here it comes, oh, is time to get to class, and nothing was accomplished.

I wonder what kind of Internet system we have in school, if it has been serviced, how often do they do it? how fast is it? is it fast enough to accomodate everyone at UAM? are there any bird nests on the wiring system? are the wires in good shape? I mean, last year, we got brand new AC´s, repainted walls and different curtains, we made a change; a small one, but nonetheless a change.   Isn't it frustrating to come to school and not be able to advance in our work because of the poor Internet service we have? We have made small changes, isn't it time to check into our Internet provider?

The Oldest Living Trees

Have you ever wondered where the oldest living things are located? Apart from researching about the oldest tortoise in the world, there are other interesting subjects one can investigate about. Rachel Sussman has taken photographs from different living organisms in the world that are 2,000 years old or older. She has been working on this project (investigating the location of the oldest living things) for the past five years with several biologists and has found different kinds of aged plants, fungus, and trees around the world.

One of the plants Sussman has found is the Llareta plant. This plant is 3,000 years old and is found in the Atacama Desert in Chile. As a relative of the parsley, this plant has a shrub that looks like it is filled with several layers of moss. This shrub consists of thousands of branches, each containing a cluster of tiny green leaves at the end, that are closely packed together.

Furthermore, Sussman has taken pictures of several trees that are older than 2,000 years. For instance, the clonal colony of Quaking Aspen trees, that looks like a forest, is found in Utah, and is around 80,000 years old. However, this looking-like-forest is one giant root system in which each tree is a stem that comes up from that system.

Another living organism that Sussman found is the Siberian Actinobacteria. This actinobacteria is not a fungus, is from 40,000 to 60,000 years old, and was found by a team of planetary biologists. This is the oldest living thing and helps the DNA repair freezing.

“April Madness: Not suitable for fine hearted”

UEFA Champions League Quarterfinals, final stretch of the Spanish “Liga,” and two “Super Clásicos” are a few of the courses that April has so lovingly prepared for the soccer fans.

The top two teams in Spain, Real Madrid F.C and F.C. Barcelona, will face each other at Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday April 16^th and three days later in the “Copa del Rey” final on Wednesday, April 20^th.

But, it gets even crazier. If both teams win their respective UEFA Champions League quarterfinal matches, they would clash on the semifinals, which is a round match! So this means, we could have four “Clásicos” in just 18 days because the semis would be played the April 27^th and May 3^rd. It gives me the goosebumps just thinking about it!

What are my predictions? This month, professors will register an unusual drop in the attendance sheet in the afternoon classes or have very absent-minded students. Sports-wise, I think Barca will win both the “Copa del Rey” and the League´s “Clásico,” but Real Madrid will defeat Barcelona in the semis.

I was born having a white canvas in hand,

As I grew up I filled it up with colors.

I woke up one morning to see that all the colors had turned the canvas black.

I stared at it, and thought-

"When you find yourself with a black canvas in hand

sprinkle it with glitter and you will create a beautiful image.

An image that at first appears to be of the sky,

but if you look deeper into it, you'll not only see

that you have created the stars,

but that you also have created a whole new universe."
